How Can I Recover Files From an External Drive Not Showing on Mac?

My external hard drive suddenly stopped showing up on my Mac, Finder, and Disk Utility. It contains important files I need to recover. How can I safely access the drive or restore the data without formatting it?

If the drive does not appear in Disk Utility even under View > Show All Devices, recovery software cannot scan it yet. Stop reconnecting it repeatedly, try another cable, port, enclosure, and Mac, and avoid Initialize, Erase, First Aid, or formatting prompts. If it becomes visible, create a byte-for-byte image first and scan the image with Disk Drill rather than working on the failing drive. If it stays completely undetected but spins, clicks, or disconnects, the safer option is a professional recovery lab.

If the drive appears in System Information under USB or Thunderbolt, the Mac is at least detecting the hardware, even if Disk Utility is not. Check Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > System Report. If the enclosure shows there but no actual disk capacity is listed, the USB-to-SATA bridge or enclosure may have failed rather than the drive itself. Moving the bare drive to a known-good enclosure can be a relatively cheap test, provided it is a standard removable SATA drive and not a model with encryption tied to its original enclosure.

If nothing appears in System Information, focus on power and connection first. A desktop drive needs its own power adapter, and a portable drive may not get enough power through a hub or adapter. Connect it directly and listen once: normal spin-up is different from repeated spin-up attempts, clicking, or beeping. Don’t keep trying if it makes those sounds.

@0xbadger2 is right that software such as Disk Drill is only relevant after macOS can see a physical device. Finder settings, mounting commands, and recovery scans cannot fix a drive that is electrically absent. If it finally appears with the correct capacity, image it immediately and recover from the image rather than testing repairs on the original disk.

Do not click Initialize, Erase, or run First Aid if the drive suddenly reappears. Those actions can write to the disk, and First Aid is a repair tool, not a recovery tool. A damaged file system or failing drive can get worse during an attempted repair.

@0xbadger2’s imaging advice is the right priority, but I would clone the drive before opening files or running a full recovery scan. If it stays connected long enough and reports the correct capacity, make a sector-by-sector image onto another drive with enough free space. Then point Disk Drill for Mac or another recovery program at that image, leaving the original untouched.

If the disk drops out during imaging, reports the wrong capacity, or makes mechanical noises, stop powering it up. At that stage, repeated DIY attempts may reduce what a professional recovery lab can retrieve. Also keep in mind that changing enclosures is not safe for every external drive. Some WD and other models handle encryption through the original USB bridge, so removing the bare disk may make otherwise intact data unreadable.

Every extra power cycle on a drive that clicks or drops out is spending your recovery budget, not saving it. That’s the part I’d hammer on. People treat a dead external like a computer that just needs one more reboot, and each attempt on a mechanically failing disk can turn a recoverable job into a partial one.

The imaging advice from @0xbadger2 and @binaryrunner3594 is correct in theory, but I’d add a reality check: a drive that keeps disconnecting rarely stays alive long enough to finish a full sector image with consumer software. ddrescue or the imaging feature in Disk Drill assume the disk stays present. If it vanishes at 12 percent and comes back with a different capacity, you don’t have a clean image, you have a mess. That behavior is usually the drive telling you it needs hardware-level handling, not another tool.

So my rough decision rule is simple. If macOS sees the disk with the correct size and it stays connected, image it and scan the copy, done. If it flickers in and out, reports the wrong capacity, or makes any noise it didn’t used to make, stop and price out a lab before you burn more hours. Recovery software is only worth your time when the hardware is stable enough to read.

One thing nobody’s flagged yet: check whether you actually had another copy of these files somewhere, even partial. Cloud sync, an old Time Machine set, email attachments, a phone that cached some of them. It sounds obvious, but half the ‘irreplaceable’ drives I’ve seen discussed turned out to have 80 percent of the important stuff sitting elsewhere. Worth ruling that out before you spend real money.
