My Windows 10 PC says my hard drive is corrupted, and I’m worried about losing important files. I don’t want to run repairs that might overwrite data before I recover everything. What’s the safest way to recover files from a corrupted hard drive first, then try to fix it?

If Windows 10 can still see the HDD in Disk Management and the size looks right, that’s usually a decent sign. It does not mean the drive is fine, but it also does not automatically mean the drive is dead. I had an older storage drive disappear from File Explorer after a bad shutdown, while Disk Management still showed the correct capacity. In that case, the problem ended up being file system corruption, not a completely failed drive.

The main thing is to avoid making the situation worse before you get your files off it.

Do not rush into repairs

I would not start with any tool that changes the drive. That includes the usual “fix it” steps Windows might suggest.

  1. Do not format the drive.
  2. Do not run CHKDSK right away.
  3. Do not copy anything new onto that HDD.
  4. Do not install recovery software on the problem drive itself.

Stuff like CHKDSK can help in the right situation, but it also modifies the file system. If the data matters, recover the files first, then worry about making the drive usable again.

Check whether the drive is physically healthy

Before doing a long recovery scan, check the drive’s SMART status. SMART data can give you a quick idea of whether the HDD is starting to fail mechanically or electronically.

Some common tools for reading SMART info are:

  1. CrystalDiskInfo
  2. Disk Drill
  3. Victoria

If the drive shows as Good, that is at least encouraging. If you see a bunch of Reallocated Sectors, Pending Sectors, or Uncorrectable Sectors, be more careful. Recovery may still be possible, but repeated scans can put extra stress on a drive that is already failing.

Get the files off before fixing anything

This is the part I would focus on first. I used Disk Drill because it can create a full image of the bad drive before scanning. That matters because you can scan the image instead of hammering the original HDD over and over.

The basic workflow is:

  1. Install Disk Drill on a different drive.
  2. Create an image of the corrupted HDD.
  3. Open that image in Disk Drill.
  4. Run Universal Scan.
  5. Preview the files that it finds.
  6. Recover the files to another drive, not the corrupted one.

The preview feature is useful because you can check whether photos, documents, and other files actually open before recovering them. The Windows version also gives you up to 100 MB of free recovery, which is enough to test whether the scan is finding usable data before paying for anything.

Then try repairing the drive

Once the important files are copied somewhere safe, then I would try to make the HDD usable again.

  1. CHKDSK is worth trying if the drive still has a normal file system. It can repair logical file system errors, but I would only use it after recovery because it changes the drive.
  2. TestDisk can help if the partition turned RAW or Windows lost the partition info. In some cases, it can restore access without formatting.
  3. Format the drive if the other options do not work. A quick format creates a fresh file system and usually clears logical corruption. If the same kind of corruption comes back, I would not trust that drive anymore.

When DIY is a bad idea

Stop messing with it if the drive starts acting like it has a hardware problem. That means things like:

  1. clicking or grinding sounds,
  2. dropping out of Disk Management,
  3. showing the wrong capacity,
  4. disconnecting during scans,
  5. or reporting lots of bad sectors in SMART.

At that point, software is not the safest route. A professional recovery lab has the tools to deal with damaged electronics or internal parts, image the drive with specialized hardware, and recover files from the copy instead of working directly on the failing disk.

Professional recovery costs a lot more than software. Logical recovery jobs often start around $300–600, while physically damaged drives can be anywhere from $800 to over $2,000, depending on what failed. Many labs do offer a 'no data, no fee' policy, so you usually only pay if they recover useful files.

So if Windows 10 still detects the HDD and reports the right size, I would treat that as a good sign, but not a reason to experiment. Check SMART first, recover the important files, and only then try CHKDSK, TestDisk, or formatting. That order gives you a much better shot at saving the data without making the drive worse.

A corrupted file system on a spare data drive is one case; a failing system drive that Windows keeps booting from is another. If this is your main Windows drive, stop rebooting it and recover from another machine or a boot USB, because Windows can keep writing logs, updates, and temp files while you’re trying to “do nothing.” Disk Drill or any recovery tool should be run from a different drive, with recovered files saved somewhere else.

Do not click Initialize, Format, or “Scan and fix” just because Windows puts the button in front of you. Windows is very good at offering the most convenient destructive option at the worst possible time. If the drive suddenly shows as RAW, unallocated, or “needs to be formatted,” treat that as a warning sign, not an invitation.

I slightly differ on the order if the drive still opens sometimes. If you can browse folders and the drive is not making weird noises, copy your most important stuff first before running any big scan. Not your Steam library or downloads, but taxes, photos, work files, passwords, anything you cannot replace. A full recovery scan or full-disk image can take hours, and a weak drive may not stay readable that long. Save those files to another physical drive, not another folder on the same disk.

After that, making an image and scanning the image is the cleaner way to do the rest. Disk Drill can do that, and so can some more technical tools, but the important idea is the same: stop working on the original as soon as possible. If the drive disconnects, hangs the whole PC, clicks, or shows the wrong size, quit the DIY route. If it behaves normally but Windows just can’t read the file system, recover first, then try CHKDSK or TestDisk later. CHKDSK belongs in the “repair the drive after the files are safe” category, not the “get my data back” category.

A drive with a damaged file system but steady hardware is a different job than a drive that is physically struggling to read sectors. In the first case, software recovery is reasonable. In the second case, every scan, retry, thumbnail preview, and “let me just check this folder” can burn more of the drive’s remaining life.

I agree with the general order above: do not repair first. But I would be careful with the “copy the important files first” approach if the drive is freezing, slowing the whole machine, or making Windows Explorer hang. Explorer is terrible at dealing with bad reads. It can sit there retrying the same damaged area forever. If the files are visible and the drive behaves normally, grab the irreplaceable stuff. If browsing the drive is painful, stop browsing it and image it.

A detail people often forget: make sure your recovery destination is ready before you start. You need another physical disk with enough free space for either the recovered files or a full image of the bad drive. If it is a 2 TB drive, do not assume a 500 GB spare SSD is enough unless you only need a small set of files. And do not recover back to the same damaged drive. That sounds obvious, but recovery tools will often let you choose it if you are not paying attention.

Disk Drill is fine for the friendlier version of this problem, especially if you use it to make an image and scan that instead of repeatedly scanning the original. The honest caveat is that imaging through normal Windows tools is still not magic. If the drive is dropping offline or producing tons of read errors, a Linux boot USB with ddrescue can be a better cheap route because it is designed to skip bad areas and come back to them later. It is less beginner-friendly, though. If the data is worth real money or has no backup anywhere, that is the point where a lab starts making more sense than “trying one more program.”

One more edge case: if this was your Windows system drive and BitLocker or device encryption was enabled, recovery may need the BitLocker recovery key. Before wiping, formatting, reinstalling, or moving parts around, check your Microsoft account or wherever you stored that key. A perfectly recovered image is not very useful if the files are encrypted and you threw away the only way to unlock them. Once the files are safe on another drive and you have verified that they actually open, then run CHKDSK, TestDisk, format, or retire the drive. That order matters.
