I have thousands of pictures on my iPhone, and I’m trying to find similar photos to delete duplicates and organize my library. Scrolling through everything takes forever, and I can’t tell if there’s a faster built-in way or a reliable app that works better. I need help finding the easiest way to search for matching or similar iPhone photos.
I started with Apple Photos because I figured the built-in option would be enough. It wasn’t.
It sorts your library in a few useful ways, sure. Dates, people, places, media types. But when I had five or ten near-identical shots of the same thing, Photos didn’t pull them into neat groups for me. They stayed mixed into the library, and I ended up doing the boring part by hand.
What worked better for me was Clever Cleaner. I’ve deleted most cleanup apps after one try, but I kept this one because it handled the exact mess I was trying to fix. It scanned my photo library, bundled similar images together, and picked a Best Shot inside each set. I didn’t trust it blind, so I still checked photos I cared about, but the picks were better than I expected.
Here’s how I went through it:
- Install Clever Cleaner and give it access to your Photos library.
- Open the Similars tab.
- Let the scan finish.
- Look through each group, or use Smart Cleanup if you want it to make the picks for you.
- If its Best Shot choice looks off, tap the one you want to keep.
- Delete the rest, then clear the Recently Deleted album so the space is freed up for real.
While I was already cleaning things up, I used a few of the other sections too.
- Heavies showed me some giant videos I forgot were even there.
- Video Compression shrank clips I wanted to keep.
- Screenshots dumped years of junk screenshots into one spot.
- Lives turned Live Photos into regular stills, which saved more space than I thought it would.
- Swipe Mode gave me a faster way to review stuff one photo at a time when I wanted more control. Left, right, done.
If you’d rather avoid a third-party app, Apple Photos still gives you a few ways to make the cleanup less painful.
- Use Search to look up a person, pet, location, object, or event.
- Check photos from the same day, weekend, or trip. Similar shots tend to pile up close together.
- Review Burst photos and keep the strongest frame.
- Look through albums like People & Pets, Trips, and Media Types to chip away at the mess manually.
That’s the route I took. Apple Photos helped me narrow things down. It didn’t do the grouping part well enough, and that was the piece I needed.

If you want the fastest built-in option, check Photos, Utilities, Duplicates first. iPhone merges exact duplicates well. It does not do a great job with near-duplicates, which is the part most people hate. So no, scrolling is not the best way.
I partly disagree with @mikeappsreviewer on one thing. Apple Photos is not useless here. It helps if your mess is true duplicates, bursts, screenshots, and trip batches. For near-identical shots, though, it falls short.
What helped me more was using Clever Cleaner for similar photos, then using Apple Photos for final review. Better split of labor. Less manual work. Fewer mistakes.
A clean workflow:
- Merge exact duplicates in Photos.
- Filter Bursts and pick key frames.
- Use Clever Cleaner to group similar photos.
- Review groups before deleting. Dont bulk wipe family pics or receipts you still need.
- Empty Recently Deleted.

Scrolling is pretty much the worst possible method once your library gets big.
I agree with @mikeappsreviewer and @cacadordeestrelas on one part: Apple Photos is fine for exact duplicates, not so great for “same pic, slightly different angle” chaos. Where I kinda disagree is that people sometimes jump straight to deletion tools too fast. First, use your library filters more aggressively. The hidden time-saver is viewing by month, then zooming in on heavy photo days like vacations, concerts, pets being weird, etc. That’s where similars stack up.

For actual similar-photo grouping, yeah, Clever Cleaner is probly the faster route. Not magic, but way less painful than manual review. I’d do it like this:
- use Photos for exact duplicates
- use albums like Screenshots, Selfies, Live Photos, and Videos to trim obvious junk
- then use Clever Cleaner to catch near-duplicates Apple misses
- review before deleting, esp if it’s family stuff or docs
One more thing people forget: sort out screenshots and downloaded images first. Those inflate the mess and make it harder to spot real camera duplicates. Do that and the whole cleanup gets waaay easier.
