Need help downloading the Remitly app on my phone

I’m trying to download the Remitly app to send money overseas, but I’m having trouble finding the correct official app and getting it installed on my Android device. Can someone walk me through where to safely download it, which version I should choose, and any common install issues I should watch out for so I don’t run into security or setup problems?

On Android you only want to install Remitly from the official Google Play Store. Anything from random websites or “APK” pages is risky.

Step by step:

  1. Open Play Store

    • On your phone, open the Play Store app.
    • Make sure you are logged into your Google account.
  2. Search the exact name

    • Type: Remitly: Send Money & Transfer
    • Look for the developer name: Remitly
    • Check the icon: blue background, white paper airplane.
  3. Check it is the real one

    • Downloads should be in the millions.
    • Rating usually around 4+ stars.
    • Lots of reviews, not a few random ones.
    • Scroll down and check “Data safety” and “About this app”.
    • Website listed should be remitly.com and support links should match that domain.
  4. Install

    • Tap Install.
    • If it fails, check:
      • Storage space.
      • Internet connection (Wi‑Fi or mobile data).
      • That you do not have a VPN messing with region.
  5. If you cannot find it at all

    • Your country Play Store region might not support it.
    • To check, go to play.google.com on a browser with the same Google account, search “Remitly”.
    • If it shows “not available in your country”, you will not see it on the phone either.
    • Do not download random APKs from search results. That is how you get malware or a fake banking app.
  6. After install

    • Open the app.
    • It will ask for phone number, email, and ID info.
    • Make sure the URL in any links it opens is remitly.com only.
    • Turn on two factor authentication if it offers it.

If you want to double check before you install, go to remitly.com in your browser, scroll to the bottom, and tap the Google Play badge there. It will send you to the exact Play Store listing, no guessing.

Couple of extra angles on top of what @mikeappsreviewer already said:

  1. Verify from Remitly’s own site first
Instead of searching in Play Store at all, do this on your phone:

    • Open Chrome.
    • Go to: https://www.remitly.com (type it in, don’t trust a search ad).
    • Scroll to the very bottom of the page.
    • Tap the Google Play badge there.
That jumps you straight into the correct listing in the Play Store, so you don’t even have to worry about copycat apps with similar names or icons.
  2. Check you’re not on a work / restricted profile
On some Android phones, if you’re using:

    • A work profile
    • A child / restricted profile
some financial apps are hidden or blocked, so you literally won’t see Remitly in search.
Go to Settings → Accounts / Users & accounts and make sure you’re on your main personal account, then open Play Store again.
  3. Region issues without using sketchy APKs
If you can see Remitly on the web Play Store but not on your phone, it’s usually one of:

    • Your Play Store country is different from your actual SIM / location.
    • Play Store cache being weird.
      Try:
    • Settings → Apps → Google Play Store → Storage → Clear cache, then Clear data.
    • Reopen Play Store, accept terms again, search Remitly.
If it is really not available for your country, ignore anyone telling you to grab a random APK. For a money transfer app that’s basically asking to get robbed.
  4. Storage & system issues that can block install
Sometimes the problem isn’t finding the real app, it’s installing it:

    • Make sure you have at least 1–2 GB free on your phone. Some devices choke even with 500 MB free.
    • If you’re on super old Android (like 5 or 6), Remitly may not support it anymore. Check your Android version in Settings → About phone. If it’s ancient, that might be why you don’t see an Install button.
  5. Double check you didn’t install a fake already
Since you mentioned “trouble finding the correct official app”:

    • Long press any existing “Remitly” looking app icon.
    • Tap App info.
    • Scroll to the bottom and see where it came from. It should say Installed from: Google Play Store.
If it doesn’t say that, or it has no info, uninstall it. Don’t log in or enter any card / ID details there.
  6. Final sanity checks once it’s installed
    First time you open it:

    • Confirm it’s using the same logo and colors as the website.
    • Any email or SMS you get after sign-up should come from an @remitly.com address.
    • If you tap any link inside those messages, make sure the browser bar shows remitly.com and not some typo domain.

So the short version: use Remitly’s own website to deep-link you to Play Store, make sure your phone profile / region aren’t blocking it, and absolutely avoid APK sites for this kind of app, even if they look “officialish”.
