I just got a new iPad and I can’t figure out how to take a screenshot. I tried pressing different button combinations and looking through Settings but nothing seems to work. Can someone explain the exact steps for taking screenshots on various iPad models, and how to find or edit them afterward?
On iPad the steps depend on which model you have.
-
If your iPad has a Home button
• Press the Top button and the Home button at the same time.
• Press and release quickly, do not hold.
• The screen will flash and you hear a camera click if sound is on.
• The screenshot thumbnail pops up in the bottom left. Tap it to edit or share.
• If you ignore it, it saves to Photos in the Screenshots album. -
If your iPad has no Home button
• Press the Top button and the Volume Up button at the same time.
• Same deal, quick press and release.
• Flash, click sound, thumbnail, then it saves to Photos. -
Using AssistiveTouch if buttons feel awkward
• Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch. Turn it on.
• Tap the floating button on the screen.
• Tap Device > More > Screenshot.
• That takes a screenshot without pressing physical buttons. -
Using Apple Pencil (if you have one)
• Put the Pencil on the bottom left or right corner of the screen.
• Swipe toward the middle of the screen.
• It takes a screenshot and opens Markup right away.
If nothing works, check:
• You are pressing the Top and Volume Up, not Volume Down, on a newer iPad.
• Any case is not blocking the buttons.
• Try a quick short press, not a long hold. Long hold can trigger power menu or Siri.
All screenshots go into Photos > Albums > Screenshots, so look there to confirm it worked.
Couple extra angles that might help, without rehashing what @caminantenocturno already covered:
-
Double‑check what actually happened after you press the buttons
Sometimes the flash/thumbnail is super quick and easy to miss. Instead of staring at the corner of the screen, open
Photos > Albums > Screenshots
and see if anything is showing up there after you try. If you see new images there, the combo is working even if it doesn’t feel like it. -
Customize the gesture so you don’t have to fight the buttons
If mashing hardware buttons isn’t working or is just annoying:- Go to
Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch. - Turn on AssistiveTouch.
- Under “Custom Actions,” set:
- Single-Tap or Double-Tap to “Screenshot.”
- Now you can just tap the floating button once or twice to grab a screenshot.
This is a lot faster than digging through AssistiveTouch menus like Device > More every time. I kinda disagree with relying on the nested menus long‑term; it gets old real fast.
- Go to
-
Use Back Tap if your iPad supports it
Not every iPad has this, but if yours does:Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap- Set Double Tap or Triple Tap to “Screenshot.”
Then just tap the back of the iPad. Looks dumb, works great.
-
If nothing works at all
At that point it’s usually:- A super thick case slightly blocking the top or volume buttons so they’re not being pressed at exactly the same time.
- Trying to hold the combo instead of a quick press and release.
- Very rare, but a profile (like from work/school) under
Settings > General > VPN & Device Managementthat limits some functions.
Try taking the case off once and doing a really quick “click‑click” of the two buttons together. If you still get zero flash, no new images under Screenshots, and AssistiveTouch “Screenshot” also does nothing, that’s when I’d suspect a software glitch and try a restart or update.
