I’m trying to download the NCL app on my phone but it either won’t install or keeps getting stuck during the download. I’ve checked my storage, Wi‑Fi, and tried restarting the device, but nothing is working. Has anyone else run into this and what can I do to successfully download and install the NCL app?
Had this happen with the NCL app last month. Here’s what worked for me and a couple of friends.
First figure out your phone type.
On iPhone:
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
Find the NCL app.
If you see it there, delete it fully, then reinstall from App Store. - Go to App Store, tap your profile icon, scroll to see if NCL is stuck in the queue.
If it is, tap the little circle to pause, then tap again to restart. - Turn off VPN if you use one. NCL’s app download seems to choke on some VPNs.
- Go to Settings > Wi Fi, turn it off, then try mobile data to download.
App size is not huge so data usually handles it. - Sign out of the App Store, then sign back in.
App Store > profile icon > Sign Out. Then log in again and retry.
On Android:
- Open Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps and device > Manage.
Look for NCL. If it shows “Installing” or “Pending”, tap it and hit cancel. Then re-try. - Clear Play Store cache.
Settings > Apps > Google Play Store > Storage > Clear Cache.
Do the same for Google Play Services. Then restart the phone. - If it still fails, Clear Storage for Play Store too.
Same menu, hit Clear Data or Clear Storage. You will not lose apps, only store settings. - Check Downloads or Download Manager app is enabled.
Settings > Apps > See all > three dots > Show system > look for Download Manager and make sure it is enabled and not restricted. - Switch from Wi Fi to mobile data, or try a different Wi Fi network.
Some hotel or work networks block store traffic.
For both:
- Make sure your date and time are set to automatic.
Wrong time sometimes breaks store downloads. - Check your OS version.
NCL needs pretty recent iOS and Android.
If your device is old, the store might not offer a compatible build or it hangs. - Try installing through the web:
iPhone: open the App Store link from NCL’s official site in Safari.
Android: open Play Store link in Chrome, then tap Install and pick your device.
If none of that works:
- Try another device on the same account.
If it works on a tablet or second phone, the issue is likely on the problem device, not your account. - Check store region. If your App Store or Play Store region is not set to a region where NCL is supported, install fails or gets stuck.
You can see this in your account settings in the store.
Last thing that fixed it for my Android:
I removed my Google account from the phone, rebooted, then added it back, then installed NCL.
Settings > Accounts > Google > Remove. Then add again.
Bit of a pain, but it finally let the app install.
Couple more angles to try that are a bit different from what @viajantedoceu already laid out:
-
Check if the store itself is having issues
- On iPhone: Try downloading any other free app you do not already have. If that also hangs, the problem is App Store or your Apple ID, not NCL.
- On Android: Same thing with Play Store. If all apps stall, it is a store/account problem.
-
Look for partial “ghost” installs that don’t show up normally
- iPhone: On the home screen, look for a grey NCL icon that says “Waiting” or “Loading.” Long‑press it and choose Cancel Download. Then reboot and retry. Sometimes it never shows in Storage but still blocks a fresh install.
- Android: Long‑press in Play Store on the NCL page and see if it says Cancel or Update instead of Install. If it says Update, cancel, close Play Store completely, reopen, then try again.
-
Check age / content restrictions
- iPhone: Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If “Installing Apps” is blocked or restricted by a profile (common on work phones or kids’ phones), NCL will just spin forever.
- Android: Settings > Apps > Special access > Install unknown apps / Restricted settings. If your company or a parental control app is installed, it may quietly block store installs.
-
Look for device management profiles or MDM
If this is a work phone or something your school/company touched:- iPhone: Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. If a management profile is there, it may prevent new apps or certain “travel / cruise” apps specifically. You basically cannot fix that without the admin.
- Android: Settings > Security > Device admin apps or Work profile. If you see a Work profile, try installing NCL from the personal profile instead.
-
Try a completely different network type
You mentioned Wi Fi is fine, but:- Try a public network like Starbucks / McDonald’s or a neighbor’s Wi Fi, just once, to rule out some router firewall weirdness.
- Some home routers block app store CDNs without you realizing, especially if you use “family safe DNS” or Pi‑hole.
-
Kill any “cleaner” / “security” apps temporarily
Stuff like “phone booster,” “data saver,” or aggressive antivirus can interrupt app downloads. Disable or uninstall those, reboot, then retry NCL. These are notorious for silently killing background downloads. -
Check low‑level storage problems
Even if you technically have free space, corrupted storage can cause installs to hang.- Try deleting a couple of large apps or a chunk of videos/photos, then power off and on.
- On Android, also run Storage > Files > cleanup if your phone has that. If other large apps install fine, this is less likely, but worth a try.
-
Region & account mismatch (slightly different spin)
Even if your store region is “correct,” issues pop up when:- You created the account in one country then moved to another and never fully updated billing.
- The NCL app is temporarily not available in your exact region even though the cruise line works there.
Test: Open the NCL app page in a web browser. If it says “not available in your country” or just never loads the Install button, that is the problem.
-
Last resort sanity check
If you know someone else with a similar phone on the same carrier and same region, ask them to try installing the NCL app on their device using their account.- If it fails for both of you on the same network, the issue might be carrier‑level blocking or a totally broken build of the NCL app in your region’s store. In that case, screenshot the error and contact NCL support or the app store support with that exact region/carrier info.
And honestly, I’d only remove the whole Google / Apple account from the phone like @viajantedoceu suggested as a last step. It works, but it is heavier than what most people need and can mess with backups, photos sync, etc., if you do not remember all your passwords.
